In which sport are test matches played?

Test matches are a traditional way to describe a long contest between national teams, especially in cricket. In cricket, a Test match is the five-day format where each side has two innings, and it’s considered the most prestigious form of the game. The term and concept are deeply linked to cricket culture, with famous series like England vs Australia—the Ashes—being built around these five-day battles. Because of this strong association, cricket is the sport most people think of when they hear “test matches.” Rugby does have international matches between nations, sometimes called test matches, but the phrase isn’t as iconic or defining for rugby as it is for cricket. Tennis and football use other competition formats and don’t typically refer to matches as tests in common usage.
