Subjects that all students must study are called what?

The concept here is about subjects that every pupil is required to take. The word that fits this sense best is compulsory, because it clearly means something you are legally or formally obliged to study as part of the curriculum. This is different from elective subjects, which you can choose or decline, and from core subjects in that core often refers to central importance within a program, but not necessarily the universal obligation in every system. So, subjects that all students must study are described as compulsory subjects.
