Where is the historical kingdom of Wessex located?

Wessex was the kingdom of the West Saxons in the southern part of England. Its heartland was in what are today Wiltshire and Somerset, with the coast extending into Dorset and Hampshire, and it even touched parts of Berkshire. This places Wessex in the south-west of England, not in the north-east, south-east, or Wales. Understanding its location helps connect the name to the region that later played a leading role in forming the medieval English kingdom.
