Which city houses the oldest university?

Oxford has the oldest university because teaching there goes back to the late 11th century, with the university taking shape in the 12th century. This long, continuous tradition makes it older than Cambridge, which began around 1209 when scholars left Oxford. Edinburgh’s university dates from 1582, and institutions in London were established much later in the 19th century. So the city with the oldest university is Oxford.
